Healthcare Santa Clarita | Is your physician in or out of your healthcare network in SCV?

When you go to your doctor’s office do you assume he/she is in your healthcare network? If you assume so you may be making a very big mistake. I hear too many times that someone “thought” their physician was in their network. Have the office staff verify with the insurance company BEFORE you see the physician, and then get it in writing on the physician’s letterhead. If you receive a bill from the physician’s office, and feel the amount is more than what the insurance would allow, you have documentation that they verified their status with the insurance. Also, don’t take it for granted that the physician is checking insurance status of other doctor’s that he/she is referring you to. You must do your own homework and check their status yourself.

As a medical billing advocate part of my job is to check the medical bills against what the insurance company has or has not covered.  Many times I find that the client has a high deductible or a high co-pay, and therefore, not all costs are going to be paid for by the insurance company — leaving the patient with a high balance due.  I try to advise people to always know what is in their health insurance policy and make certain they are adequately covered.  Like it or not, Healthcare Reform (aka Obamacare)has started.  Regardless of how you feel about it do not take for granted that your insurance is adequate for your needs.  Make certain that you know what your healthcare benefits are (i.e., deductible, co-pay, co-insurance, prescription benefits, emergency room/urgent care visits, etc).  Things are changing very rapidly the in the healthcare world — insurance premiums are going up while benefits are being reduced.
