Looking for a senior portrait photographer go to http://bonniemcdermott.com

I had a lot of fun doing senior portraits this weekend. I did some traditional ones but I had enough time to get creative.

Wanted: Professional Photographer go to http://bonniemcdermott.com.

Posing Tip: Looking Slimmer

Try this out in front of a mirror.

Stand with your body straight to the mirror (feet pointing at mirror) hands at your side. Now turn angling your whole body (including feet) to the mirror. Watch too see how much slimmer you look as your body rotates. Keeping turning all the way to about 45 degrees. Find the angle you look the slimmest. Now put your weight on the back foot (the one furthest from the mirror) keeping it at the 45 degree angle to the mirror and turn your front foot to point at the mirror. Now try different variations on this pose. Turn your upper body back towards the mirror (keeping your lower body in the pose), put an hand or both hands on your hips, cross your arms in front of you, tilt your head, and/or put your weight on your front foot. Add in props a jacket thrown over a shoulder, a stool for your front foot, high heels, etc. Remember the poses you like best and when you go to your session try them out (only now the mirror is a camera). Remember to turn towards the light if there is only one. Remember to relax. You do not want to hold your body stiff or to hold your breath. Have fun and laugh a little.

Photographers SCV | Senior Portraits | What To Wear Part 3 | bonniemcdermott.com

Senior Portraits | What To Wear Part 3

Having more than one outfit gives you the freedom to show off your personality beyond what your school wants for the yearbook. Your first outfit should be your “yearbook” outfit – formal and dressy. The poses will be traditional senior portrait poses and some creative ones. After you have that out of the way you might what one that is casual maybe old jeans. A jacket can add a nice touch because you can wear it or throw it over a shoulder. Another direction is an outfit that really shows off who you are or your interest. Adding in props -sports, music, etc.- is a good idea. Think about your jewelry, hair, make-up, etc. These photos may have some traditional poses and you may even used them for the yearbook or to send out to family and friends. This is the time as your photographer I am going to get creative and based on how your dressed will reflect in the poses, lighting, and photography. First Lutheran student during your senior portraits I am only your photographer and not a teacher. What happens in the studio, stays in the studio. Your portraits are in a password protected gallery so the portraits that are not for the yearbook will not be seen by the school unless you show them.

Need a photographer http://bonniemcdermott.com?

What To Wear Part 2:

General Hints and Suggestions

When picking your clothing you want keep in mind that for portraits your face in the main subject. You want your clothing to enhance and not distract away from your face. You do not want things that are too busy or bold. Things that help to frame your face are good. Most important you need to feel you look great in it and it is YOU. If you are not going to have a change of clothes during your session for senior portraits at First Lutheran your look needs to be dressy to formal.

1. Solid colors usually work best. Is there a color that brings out your eyes? Strips, patterns, too shinny and too bright can take away from the face and make you look larger.

2. Collars, V-necks, and jackets work nicely to frame the face.

3. Long sleeved shirts are best. Two reasons for this first a lot of skin showing can take away from the face and second your arms will look slim. Try to avoid tank tops.

4. New clothing is best. No stains, faded spots (unless that is the look you want), or frays (unless that is the look your after). Look the clothing over for things that well ruin your photo or be costly to fix by the photographer. Check it in bright light. Even new clothes can have flaws that show up in photos so really check it carefully. Make sure it is wrinkle free (of course unless that is the look.)

5. Think of your whole look: Head to Toe – I have photographed lots of people with dirty, unkempt nails (fingers or toes) and they end up in some of the photos, look really bad, and in the end I have to deleted them (sometimes they would of been the best shot of the day). Look for those little details that can make or break your senior portrait.

Photographers | Senior Portraits | Posing Tip 1 | bonniemcdermott.com

Posted by bonniephoto on September 3, 2010

To see my work go to http://bonniemcdermott.com.

I am starting a series on posing tips dedicated to the Class of 2011 at First Lutheran High School. Whereas, most of the tips are general for any kind of portrait, some will relate to just senior portraits.

You want to keep in mind that your senior portrait really is a big deal. For a lot of you it will be your first experience working with a professional photographer. Also for the most part more people will see your senior portrait than any other photo you have or will have taken (even than your wedding!). In addition, you might not have another professional portrait taken for years. Therefore, it is important that you love your photo, it reflects who you are, and you look your best.

Posing Tip 1 – Prior To Your Session

Do you have to do all the things I suggest before your session? Definitely not but the more you do the better your photos will turn out. The most important thing to keep in mind is getting your senior portrait done should be FUN so if my ideas sound like a drag then don’t do them. You do not want your experience to suck even before that first click. Now that I have my disclaimer out of the way, it’s important that you do your homework. Finding the right photographer, the right outfit(s), and researching to find what you like and don’t like both in photography and posing. Before you even get in front of the photographer look through your favorite magazines, websites, movies, and anywhere you see images of people that excite you. Try to decide what you like about the images. Is it the clothing, hair, makeup, location, photography style, lighting, pose, activity, etc. Then talk to your photographer and if possible have some samples. If it’s the clothing, hair, or makeup can you find or do something similar? Is there a location that has the same feel? Does the photographer have a style that you love? What do you like about the lighting and ask if the photographer thinks he/she can do something similar. Practice posing in front of a mirror. I think this is the hardest one because it seems so lame. I do it when no one is around and I still feel stupid but it helps me know how to look my best and more importantly how to make you look your best in the photos I take of you. If it’s the activity is there a way to bring it into your portrait?

I would love for you to share your ideas and the places you find your inspiration. Let’s make the Class of 2011 have truly the most unique and amazing senior portraits ever!

I am getting ready to photograph the class of 2011 for First Lutheran High School in Sylmar, CA. I will have my studio open during September 20th to October 15th  for this purpose with some really nice packages at very affordable prices. I am always available to take senior portraits but other than this time period you would have to pay my normal rates.

I have decided to open this event to other seniors that are not FL students looking for a photographer for their portraits. If you are interested in getting more information Email me at Bonnie@bonniemcdermott.com and I will send you a package with more details and prices. I am the yearbook adviser at First Lutheran so if your school allows any photographer I will be able to provide your school what they need for the yearbook.
